Worlds AIDS Day is on Monday, December 1, 2008. First observed in 1988, World AIDS Day was started by health ministers from around the world who called for a spirit of social tolerance and a greater awareness of HIV/AIDS on a global scale. This year’s theme is “Leadership” and events all across the planet are planned to help increase awareness and education as well as to urge governments to keep the commitments they have made to fight the deadly disease.

I believe there needs to be a heightened awareness brought to African-American Women with HIV/AIDS here in America. There are so many causes out here for Africans, Gays with Aids, etc. But I haven’t seen any local non-profits here in Seattle that focus on awareness and/or help for African-American Women with the disease. I came across an article in The Seattle Times back in 2005 that talked about the increasing rise of African-American Women in America with HIV/AIDS. It discussed many reasons why the disease was on the rise with this race but what’s crazy is that this article one of the few that I discovered in my personal quest to bring awareness to this cause. I have no personal reason to bring awareness to this cause, I believe I was called to it. In the next several months, I am going to continue this quest for knowledge beyond this week. Today in service, we were told by our prophet to be of service locally before being of service globally. I hope that this fundraiser will not only bring awareness to this cause but open our eyes to the importance of knowing more about this disease and how it not only effects African but all walks of life.
